Nobody's Fool

"Welcome to our manor. It's like a National Trust property — without the trust."

Danny Dyer and Emily Atack host a quiz which the Radio Times correctly described as "fun". Ten contestants live in a mansion. Every day, they're isolated in a private "Quiz Pod", and answer questions against the clock. Contestants know their own score, and can tell others how much they earned — but nobody has to tell the truth.

As all the players answer the same questions, the quiz segments could get very repetitive, so the producers ensured it was interesting and over quickly. We viewers get to play along with one contestant in their quiz section, then efforts from the remaining contestants are edited together into one slick montage.

There are also some reward challenges, and these are properly entertaining. Scramble for tennis balls to spell out a nine-letter word! Shoot paintballs at a duck containing the answer to a sum! Listen to someone sing a popular song in a foreign language, then pick up when he finishes! Nobody's Fool knew that we watch television to be entertained, and made sure there was plenty of entertainment in these segments - spectacular stunts, and contestants who were happy to step into the dressing-up box.

At the end of each day, our players try to identify the weakest player and evict them. So it's not so much about how clever you are, it's about how clever your rivals think you are. Was the best strategy to evict the best quizzer and take a smaller pot? Or was it to evict the weakest quizzer, and hope the better players take themselves out through error or bad luck?

A couple of unfortunate events caused trouble for the producers - one contestant chose to withdraw rather than tell outright lies, and another disqualified himself by showing a card to confirm how much he had put into the pot that day. Lesser shows would be holed below the waterline; Nobody's Fool was clearly on reduced speed throughout, but navigated through the series to a reasonable conclusion.

Emily Atack and Danny Dyer were strong hosts; Emily was the brains, reading the quiz questions and computing the money claimed, while Danny introduced the events and explained them crisply.

Game show fans spotted a lot of influences - direct references to shows including The Generation Game and Blockbusters, the mixture of brainwork and groupwork from Genius Game, and the style was meant to recall The Traitors. The first series was not as slick - or anything like as popular - as The Traitors, but the game is flexible and interesting enough to earn a second series.
