Broadcast

BBC2, 4 June to 27 August 1970

Synopsis

Not a Word presented its panels with a set of letters, and asked them to insert other letters to make a word using all of the letters, in order.

For instance, the panel might be given

M P I B L

"That's a conteMPtIBLe set," scoffed one.

"Proper nouns, on this show, are iMPermIssiBLe," said another

"Simple plurals - those formed just by adding -s - are incoMPatIBLe with victory," noted someone else.

"Frankly, I find all this discussion iMPossIBLe," said the last.

Longest valid word wins the round.

Though not a tremendous success - the "'incomplete' word game" lasted just one series on BBC2 - the basic idea was sound. It returned two decades later as the hook of Catchword with Paul Coia.
