Sylvester was born as James Kent-Smith in the Scottish town of Dunoon. His name came about by accident when a critic, upon seeing a circus show featuring someone called Sylvester McCoy, assumed the character was actually a real person. He has been a jobbing comic actor for many years, ranging in sidekick roles on Vision On and Jeremy Beadle's Eureka to the lead role as the seventh Dr Who. In 1996, he eventually handed over this role to Paul McGann in a one-off BBC movie.
